Sappho: The Poetess description
Sappho: The Poetess is a musical memoir about the ancient Greek poet who became history's first great songwriter.
Torn from the woman she loves and forced into a marriage she never wanted, Sappho fights to reclaim her voice and her lost love, learning the price the world demands of those who defy its rules. Guitar in hand, she returns as part oracle, part rock star, in a story of women who dare to love, to dream and to create in defiance of the world.
The production is written by Hayley Canham and directed by Hannah Hauer-King, produced by DEM Productions.
The show plays as part of the SHEDINBURGH Festival at the Young Vic, in a special stripped-back version reimagined for the festival.
