Samira description
Samira is a new play about a revolution watched from a safe distance, and the woman at the centre of it.
Damascus, 2011. Protests fill the streets and Samira stands at the heart of a movement demanding change, charismatic, radical and very funny, posting an unfiltered account of events as they happen. Thousands of miles away a group of London academics follow her, captivated by a revolution unfolding in real time. Then she stops posting.
The play is a world premiere and one of eight new works in the National Theatre's 2027 programme. It runs in the Dorfman Theatre, the smallest of the three auditoriums and the house where the National Theatre stages most of its new writing.
The play is by Carmen Nasr, whose work includes the stage version of Under the Shadow. It is directed by Emily Burns, who directed Dear Octopus at the National Theatre.
May Calamawy, known on screen for Moon Knight and Ramy, leads the company alongside Joshua McGuire, seen in Anatomy of a Scandal and on stage in Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, and Sirine Saba, whose National Theatre work includes Phaedra.
