Salome description
Wild, decadent, unmissable – It's Oscar Wilde's Salome, on stage at Theatre Royal Haymarket.
Power and obsession sit at the dark heart of Salome, Oscar Wilde's extraordinary version of the grisly bible story. Directed by Maxim Didenko, who has been described as 'visionary', this provocative English-language production premiered at Jaffa Fest 2024. Told with Hebrew and Russian via subtitles, it's a bold and hypnotic re-telling of the writer's scandalous masterwork.
Salomé is the stepdaughter of the lecherous ruler Herod Antipas. She becomes obsessed with John the Baptist, but he isn't interested. Hell hath nothing like a woman spurned. Salomé is determined to wreak revenge, and her deadly Dance of the Seven Veils unleashes chaos. Provocative, brave and and haunting, themes of power, eroticism, and the price of forbidden yearnings unfold against a stunning backdrop designed by Galya Solodovnikova and lit by Gleb Filshtinsky.
A shocking story of seduction and revenge is brought to new life in this extraordinary production that blends dance, drama, and visual theatre, with Music by Louis Lebe. Produced by Ekaterina Kashyntseva and co-produced by Len Blavatnik, the show is presented by the Gesher Theatre.
