Romeo & Juliet description

Tom Holland's Romeo & Juliet sold out in a couple of hours as over sixty thousand fans hoovered up all the tickets. Holland plays Romeo Montague in Jamie Lloyd’s ‘pulsating’ new version of Shakespeare’s violent, bloody tragedy. Let’s hope it comes back for another run!

Superstar director Jamie Lloyd directs the British global acting star Tom Holland, whose role in all six Spider Man movies made him a legend in his own lifetime. Now he’s due in the West End to light up the Bard’s best-loved romantic tragedy for a strictly limited twelve week run. The rest of the cast will be announced nearer the time.

Charting Tom Holland’s extraordinary success

Tom Holland found fame an early age in Billy Elliot the Musical. Not long afterwards he voiced the character of Sho in the UK version of the 2010 animation The Secret World of Arrietty. But it was his role in 2012’s The Impossible that established him as one of the industry's best young talents.

Making his screen debut as the iconic Spider Man in 2016, since then he has won a BAFTA and three Saturn Awards. His recent work includes 2022’s Uncharted, 2020’s The Devil All the Time, and 2021’s Cherry. He also directs, and has voiced roles in the computer animated Spies in Disguise from 2019 and Onward in 2020.

A legendary British director

British director Lloyd is loved for his work with his own company, The Jamie Lloyd Company. His contemporary directorial style has made him a highly desirable creative force in the world of live entertainment and he’s also known for promoting affordable theatre for young and diverse audiences. As Daily Telegraph critic Dominic Cavendish said, very few directors have Lloyd’s ability to transport us to the ‘upper echelons of theatrical pleasure’.

His 2019 Broadway revival of Betrayal with Tom Hiddleston, the 2020 West End production of The Seagull with Emilia Clarke, and the unforgettable 2022 Brooklyn Academy of Music's production of Cyrano de Bergerac starring James McAvoy are all Jamie Lloyd classics. And that’s why people take notice when he says Tom Holland is one of the greatest, most exciting young actors around.

A Shakespeare plot to die for

The plot is just as famous as the lead role and director. It’s all about the feuding Montagues and Capulets, two wealthy families whose constant fights cause chaos in Verona. The Prince of Verona decides that the next family member to break the peace will be executed. When Romeo and his friends gatecrash a Capulet party, he meets Juliet and falls in love.

The couple marry. Romeo celebrates his marriage with his friends but gets in a fight with Juliet's cousin, Tybalt. Tybalt kills Mercutio and Romeo avenges him by killing Tybalt. Romeo is banished. Juliet's dad wants her to marry Paris but she refuses, faking her own death in a plan to stay with her love. Romeo thinks she’s dead and kills himself, then Juliet commits suicide.
