Rigoletto - Royal Ballet and Opera description
Power has the last laugh in Verdi's beloved opera Rigoletto at the ROH.
One of Verdi's best-loved operas, Rigoletto, is back in a darkly elegant production from Oliver Mears, conducted by the acclaimed Verdi expert Mark Elder.
The story goes like this. Rigoletto leads a double life. He's the jester in the Duke of Mantua's court but as well as being funny he's a masterfully cruel man. He adores his daughter Gilda, and he'll do anything to keep the two contrasting worlds he inhabits apart. Then his master, a serial womaniser who gets everything he wants, decides he wants Gilda. But he's already having a fling with the married Countess Ceprano. When Rigoletto finally takes his jesting too far in an attempt to save his daughter, things start to go very wrong.
Featuring the lovely aria, La donna è mobile – which translates as Women are fickle – along with Gilda's gorgeous aria, Caro nome, Oliver Mears' acclaimed version presents the popular story as an exploration of morality that sets power against innocence, in a world where decadence and corruption are rife.
The show celebrates Mark Elder's 50th anniversary as a conductor for The Royal Opera, making it even more special. The cast varies according to the performance date and the creative team comprises Composer Giuseppe Verdi, Libretto Francesco Maria Piave, Director Oliver Mears, Set designer Simon Lima Holdsworth, Costume designer Ilona Karas, Lighting designer Fabiana Piccioli and Movement Director Anna Morrissey.
Rigoletto tickets take you to a significant opera masterpiece showcasing Verdi's remarkable talent through powerful themes of themes of love, betrayal and sacrifice. It looks beautiful, sounds stunning, and the dancing is sheer delight.
