Rebecca description

Rebecca - Based on the book by Daphne Du Maurier

Have you read the 1938 novel by Daphne Du Maurier? Maybe you've seen the Oscar nominated Hitchcock movie from 1940, starring Laurence Olivier and Joan Fontayne? Perhaps you saw the Netflix adaptation? Whether you've read it, seen it, or know nothing at all about it, this is a brilliant story with a creepy edge.

What's the story behind Rebecca?

Rebecca is realised with the help of an orchestra of 18 musicians, directed by Alejandro Bonatto who directed the critically acclaimed production of Donizetti's Rita as well as being deeply involved in the Charing Cross Theatre's production of Francis Poulenc and Jean Cocteau's The Human Voice in late 2022.

Buy cheap tickets for Rebecca to experience a brand new English translation by Michael Kunze and Christopher Hampton. Christopher Hampton is a two-time Tony Award winner (Best Score and Best Book for Sunset Boulevard). He's also an Oscar winner, taking the Best Adapted Screenplay award for his work on Dangerous Liaisons and The Father.

A remarkably successful musical production by the Austrian musical producer Vereinigte Bühnen Wien, the plot remains faithful to Daphne Du Maurier's 1938 novel. So far the musical has thrilled more than 2 million people worldwide across several countries, in ten different languages. Now it's been translated into English for the first time.

The premiere takes place at London's Charing Cross Theatre. The show is written by Michael Kunze and Sylvester Levay, the highly successful German-language musical theatre composers. The world premiere took place at the VBW-theatre Raimund Theater in Vienna, Austria in 2006, where it sold out for three seasons.

About Rebecca

The musical Rebecca stars 22 original songs, a thriller rich in intrigue and surprises.

When the rich Maxim De Winter brings his sweetly naive new wife home to his Cornish estate, Manderley, his manipulative housekeeper, Mrs. Danvers, is furious. She thinks the new wife is no match for De Winter's first wife, the mysterious and glamorous Rebecca who died by drowning.

The resulting psychological thriller is hugely engaging, very enjoyable, and always exciting. No wonder it's all set to be a massive hit.

The world-famous novel became a celebrated Alfred Hitchcock film in 1940, starring Laurence Olivier, Joan Fontaine, Judith Anderson, George Sanders and Gladys Cooper and was nominated for 11 Oscars, winning Best Picture and Best Cinematography.
