Pity description

Everything seems so normal, another unremarkable day. Then it all explodes – the juxtaposition of the daily, mundane jollities and the unexpected, violent bloodshed. Pity looks at whether things truly are going to hell in a handcart. Perhaps they are, perhaps we are simply sitting and watching while our world burns. How very Nero.

Pity is the first play from playwright Rory Mullarkey in the larger space of the Royal Court, a theatre that has championed playwrights from Simon Stephens to Jez Butterworth to Martin McDonagh. All three are Olivier Award-winning playwrights, the latter is also a Golden Globe and BAFTA winner for his latest screenplay Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. Mullarkey’s previous work in the upstairs space, The Wolf From The Door, came in the same year as number of playwriting awards.

Director Sam Pritchard has produced work for the larger space before. Last year, he brought Guillermo Calderón’s B, a world premiere, and Grimly Handsome to the theatre. The Royal Court Artistic Director, Vicky Featherstone, was recently named as No. 1 on The Stage’s 2017 list of the most influential theatre makers and individuals. She catapulted herself forwarded after so vehemently speaking out in the wake of the sexual harassment scandal that has swept the industry. Her other recent work includes directing Our Ladies Of Perpetual Succour and programming The Ferryman.
