Noughts & Crosses description

Malorie Blackman's gripping novel Noughts and Crosses is on stage in the capital.

Noughts and Crosses weaves a romantic story like no other. The plot is set in a divided society driven by racial prejudice where we meet Sephy, who is a 'Cross' as well as the Deputy Prime Minister's daughter, and Callum, a 'Nought' whose dad is an activist. As they fall ever-deeper in love the tensions surrounding them and the violence it inspires become worse in a story exploring powerful themes of passion, revolution, and how a divided society affects the way we grow up.

Noughts & Crosses is a series of six novels and three novellas for young adults. The stories take place in an alternative Britain called Albion, in a fictional version of the 21st century. While slavery is abolished, segregation continues. The dark-skinned Crosses have control over the lighter-skinned Noughts. Africa has been renamed Zafrika and Scandinavia, called Fenno-Scandia, is the only country where the Noughts are in control of their own destiny.

This tense love story, adapted by Sabrina Mahfouz for the stage, has been widely praised for its 'Excellence in Touring', winning the 2019 UK Theatre Awards 2019 as well as becoming a finalist for the Best Show for Children and Young People award.

Director Simon Kenny joins Designer Esther Richardson in a production presented by Pilot Theatre in association with Northern Stage. A dynamic, powerful, compelling play, it is perfect for people of every age.

Buy Noughts and Crosses tickets to see a highly entertaining eye-opener of a show set in a frightening fictional place and time.
