A childhood Disney parade, staged in a living room and filmed on a camcorder, restaged twenty years later by the child who directed it.
Rob Madge grew up putting on shows at home: costumes made from whatever was to hand, a running order, and parents cast in whatever roles were left over. The centrepiece was an ambitious Disney parade that did not entirely go to plan. Using the family's own home video footage alongside live performance, Rob revisits those productions and the people who indulged them, building a portrait of a family that said yes to a child who wanted to be everything at once.
My Son's A Queer (But What Can You Do?) premiered at the Turbine Theatre in 2021 and has since played the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, a national tour, two West End runs and a season on Broadway. It was nominated for the Olivier Award for Best Entertainment or Comedy Play and won the WhatsOnStage Award for Best Off-West End Production. This is its final West End run, a strictly limited season of 23 performances at the Apollo Theatre.
The show is written and performed by Rob Madge and directed by Luke Sheppard, who won the 2026 Olivier Award for Paddington The Musical and whose other productions include & Juliet and In The Heights. The songs are by Pippa Cleary.
Rob Madge performs the piece alone, playing themself at several ages alongside the recorded voices of their family. A former child performer, Madge appeared in the West End in Oliver! and Les Miserables before writing this show, which began as a lockdown video posted online.
