Miss Nightingale description

The show that highlights the glitz of the Blitz is set to transfer to London’s West End in the first time since its inception in 2011. Miss Nightingale is a World War II musical written by Mathew Bugg, charting an illicit love affair and the dreams of a working-class girl to be a cabaret star.

Lauren Chinery plays Maggie, or Miss Nightingale, the aspiring singer who rises to Blitz cabaret stardom before doing her turn for the troops. Together with professional partner George (played by Matthew Floyd Jones), the duo scores a gig at the newest night club in town, run by war hero and socialite Sir Frank Worthington-Blythe (Oliver Mawdsley). As the audience sits in cabaret style, they witness the growth of the act as well as of the forbidden love affair that challenges the sensibilities of the time.

Both Floyd Jones and Mawdsley have worked with Bugg previously, on a Doncaster production of Beauty and the Beast. Floyd Jones is best known as the composer of Edinburgh Festival smash hit A Super Happy Story (About Feeling Super Sad), as one half of the duo Frisky and Mannish and for his solo performance in Richard Gadd is Close To You.

Miss Nightingale has played five sold-out UK tours and previously came to London in 2017 with a run at The Vaults. Its original London premiere was in 2011 at the King’s Head Theatre – now Bugg’s script and music finally make the leap for over six weeks at the Hippodrome Casino, Leicester Square. It previews from 21 March 2018.
