Midnight at the Never Get description
Midnight at the Never Get is an intimate musical about two men, the songs they wrote together and the love they were forced to hide.
Set in New York in 1965, when a relationship between two men was still illegal, the show follows Trevor Copeland, a cabaret singer, and Arthur Brightman, the songwriter who was once his lover. From the stage of an underground Greenwich Village nightclub called the Never Get, Trevor performs the songs the pair created and looks back on their romance — and on how the pressures of the era, and their own ambitions, pulled them apart.
Staged as a nightclub act and full of original songs written in the style of the Great American Songbook, this is the UK premiere of a musical that began off-Broadway at New York's York Theatre in 2018, where it was a New York Times Critic's Pick and earned Lucille Lortel, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle and Off-Broadway Alliance Award nominations. Reviewing the London run, The Telegraph found that it "provides a gorgeous pastiche of the Great American Songbook," while The Guardian wrote that the show "sees music as both heartbreak and cure."
The book, music and lyrics are by Mark Sonnenblick, from a show conceived by Sam Bolen, Max Friedman and Mark Sonnenblick. It is directed by Tony Award-winner David Cromer (The Band's Visit), with set design by Scott Pask, costumes by Jonathan Lipman, lighting by Heather Gilbert, sound by Paul Groothuis, choreography by Lynne Page and musical supervision and orchestrations by Andrew Resnick.
Ben Platt — the Tony, Grammy and Emmy Award-winner known for Dear Evan Hansen and Parade — plays Trevor Copeland, with Gregor Milne as Arthur Brightman and Barry James completing the company.
