Memphis the musical has already delighted audiences and won numerous awards over there. Now it’s over here. London’s theatreland is delighted to welcome Memphis to the stage after a legendary Broadway run and a fifty five city tour of the USA. Better still, the UK show stars Britain’s favourite home-grown soul diva, Beverley Knight.

Knight was nominated three times for Best Female at the prestigious Brit Awards, and has also been nominated twice for a Mercury Music Prize. Her big, luscious, soulful voice has helped her sell a monster million albums in Britain alone since she debuted in 1995.

Memphis played on Broadway from October 2009 to August 2012, where it won four 2010 Tony Awards including Best Musical. Show tunes by the Grammy-winning David Bryan, also a co-founder of the rock phenomenon Bon Jovi, meet a gripping real life story head on to deliver drama, spectacle, emotion and the kind of powerful energy that raises the roof.

It’s exhilarating. It’s explosive. And if you love nothing better than a fine quality musical, it is definitely not to be missed.

What’s it about? Roll back time to the 1950s. Memphis, Tennessee, is bursting with life, a place full of seedy clubs, smoky bars and underground music. They don’t know it, but a new era is about to dawn. Rock and roll, the blues and gospel music are set to go mainstream, and the world will never be the same again.

When the young DJ Huey Calhoun falls in truly, madly and deeply in love with rock and roll, he also falls for the beautiful Felicia, a fabulous nightclub singer. He’s white, she’s black and sparks are about to fly. A musical by David Bryan and Joe DiPietro, it’s inspired by the true story of the Memphis DJ Dewey Philips, the first ever DJ to play Elvis on the airwaves, a potent tale of triumph against cultural adversity.

Huey’s determination to bring Felicia’s stunning voice out of the nightclubs and onto the USA’s mostly-reluctant radio stations begins a battle that ignites the new musical revolution and flies in the face of the country’s still-powerful cultural and racial divides.

One thing to note: Beverley Knight won’t be appearing in Monday evening or Wednesday matinee performances, so if you’re determined to see her in the role, check she’s on stage before you buy tickets.
