Matthew Bourne’s The Midnight Bell description

Love evocative, intoxicating dance? You'll adore Matthew Bourne's The Midnight Bell.

Are you ready for an extraordinary dance-theatre treat? Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures presents The Midnight Bell, a brand new show inspired by the work of the English writer Patrick Hamilton (Twenty Thousand Streets Under the Sky, Rope, Gaslight, Hangover Square), who wrote the novel Midnight Bell in 1929.

Known for his cynical, bleak explorations of 1930s working-class London's inter-war street culture, powerful sympathy for the poor and shockingly black humour, the author was also a drunken, car-hating misanthrope who died at age 58 of cirrhosis of the liver and kidney failure, quite a character!

This remarkable new show brings the dodgy underbelly of the capital's cheap boarding houses and filthy streets to startling life. It's set in a pub in Soho, The Midnight Bell, where the lost and lonely meet, get drunk, explore their secret desires, admit their forgotten dreams and play out their frustrations, longings and betrayals.

The stars of the show are Cordelia Braithwaite, Reece Causton, Glenn Graham, Daisy May Kemp, Hannah Kremer, Michela Meazza, Andy Monaghan, Liam Mower, Dominic North, Bryony Pennington, Edwin Ray, Danny Reubens, Ashley Shaw and Alan Vincent. The show is directed and choreographed by Matthew Bourne himself, with music by Terry Davies, set and costume design from Lez Brotherston, lighting design by Paule Constable and sound design by Paul Groothuis.

Don’t miss this unique dance-theatre masterpiece that reveals the emotional turbulence of 1930s Soho, a place where despair is never far from the surface but despite everything, there's hope.
