In just ninety minutes you'll watch, spellbound as eleven scenes unfold, spanning seventy years to tell the story of five very different Marys. This is Mary Page Marlowe, played to perfection by Academy Award winner Susan Sarandon (Dead Man Walking, Thelma & Louise) and Academy Award nominee Andrea Riseborough (To Leslie, Matilda The Musical). A non-linear play of moments stitched together, it explores painful family dynamics, agonising break-ups, alcoholism and more to reveal Mary’s life.

This time-jumping play is the UK premiere of Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Tracy Letts' modern masterpiece. It premiered at the Steppenwolf Theatre in Chicago, Illinois, in 2016 and debuted Off-Broadway two years later, acclaimed from the start for its imaginative structure and emotional depth. It also happens to be Susan Sarandon’s UK stage debut as well as Andrea Riseborough’s return to the theatre after a fifteen year break, adding extra star quality to the production. Direction from Old Vic Artistic Director Matthew Warchus adds a dash more spice.

As a deeply moving portrait of a woman’s inner life, this play demands an intimate setting. The auditorium will be transformed into an in-the-round setting to immerse you in the emotion. A mix of a major Hollywood star, a brilliant British actor and a highly respected playwright bringing the play to the UK for the first time makes this one of the year's most-discussed theatre treats.

Writer Tracy Letts and Director Matthew Warchus – who is also a multi-award winning playwright and film maker - are joined by Rob Howell, responsible for the Set and Costumes. Hugh Vanstone is the Lighting Designer and the Sound comes from Simon Baker, with Casting by Jim Carnahan CSA.
