Martin Guerre description

A fresh new revival of a beloved true story, Martin Guerre takes to the stage at the Old Vic.

Martin Guerre is a remarkable true story of forbidden love, passion, and deceit. This new version of the original 1996 musical adaptation is developed and directed by Old Vic Artistic Director Matthew Warchus, (Pride, Matilda The Musical), who promises a spectacle that has been reworked radically. It comes with new lyrics, folk-inspired orchestration, and 'in the round' staging to immerse you deeper than ever in the plot.

Originally created by the team who gave us Miss Saigon and Les Misérables, this Olivier Award-winning musical is completely captivating. It's based on a real life case of imposture, following a poor young couple in rural France during the 1500s. Many years after Betrande's husband Martin left her and fled the village, a man turns up claiming to be Martin. But he is so much kinder and nicer than her husband used to be. They're happy at first but when the villagers accuse him of being an imposter, things start to go badly wrong.

A story so compelling it has been made into a movie as well as re-told a million times, the gorgeous music is written by Claude-Michel Schoenberg. The book is by Claude-Michel Schönberg and Alain Boublil, with lyrics from Boublil, Edward Hardy, Annabel Mutale Reed, Stephen Clark and Paul Hodge

Rob Howell's Set and Costume Design, Lizzi Gee's Choreography, and Lighting by Hugh Vanstone, Luca Panetta and Toby Ison add to the magic. There's Sound from Fergus O'Hare, Orchestration from Tom Curran and Musical Supervision by Chris Poon, and the Casting comes from Will Burton for Grindrod Burton Casting.

Buy Martin Guerre tickets to experience a brilliant new take on a story that never grows old.
