Lyonesse description

Lyonesse – Starring Kristin Scott Thomas and Lily James

Lyonesse was a legendary kingdom described in the tales of King Arthur. A long slice of land stretching from Land's End at the South West tip of Cornwall to the Isles of Scilly in the Celtic Sea, the stories say it was flooded by the sea overnight. It’s also the name of a fascinating new play of the same name, described as ‘searing and passionate’.

Kristin Scott Thomas and Lily James star in Lyonesse later this year, a play written by Penelope Skinner and directed by Ian Rickson. The drama kicks off at the West End’s Harold Pinter Theatre from 17th October to 23rd December 2023.

Lyonesse is designed by Georgia Lowe, whose recent work on Henry VIII at The Globe (2022), Anna Karenina at the Crucible Theatre (2022), and The Trials at the Donmar Warehouse (2022) thrilled audiences. The lighting is by Jessica Hung Han Yun, who lit the RSC’s My Neighbour Totoro so beautifully at the Barbican. And the music comes from the Oscar-winning composer Stephen Warbeck, with sound by Tingying Dong.

What's the story behind Lyonesse?

This play marks Kirsten Scott Thomas’ return to the stage after a brilliant run in The Audience. Lily James was last seen making an awesome impact with her work in All About Eve opposite Gillian Anderson. Scott Thomas is a BAFTA winner and Oscar nominee, Lily James has been nominated for a Golden Globe award, and together they’re set to create sheer stage magic.

The play covers key themes of creativity, purpose, isolation, violence, magic and mothers. An extraordinary and memorable piece of theatre, it explores the importance of storytelling and shaping your own narrative.

About Lyonesse

No one knows why Elaine disappeared. She was known for avoiding the spotlight but a thirty year absence is extreme. It’s a mystery. The good quality cheap theatre tickets for Lyonesse we sell reveal the story of Elaine, played by Scott Thomas. A reclusive actor, she’s been out of the public eye for three decades when she invites the young movie executive Kate, played by James, to her home in Cornwall, and finally begins to share what happened to her.

Once the women hole up at Elaine’s remote Cornish home to plan the actor’s comeback, questions start to fly. This is Elaine’s story but who really controls it? The person who tells the story or those who hear it?
