Lemons Lemons Lemons Lemons Lemons description

Lemons Lemons Lemons Lemons Lemons imagines a world where we’re forced to say less. It’s about what we say and how we say it, and the things we can only hear in the silence. Expect dead cats and activism, eye contact and lemons, lemons, lemons, lemons, lemons.

What's the story behind LEMONS, LEMONS, LEMONS, LEMONS, LEMONS?

This is the talented Sam Steiner's debut play. The show premiered at Warwick Arts Centre in 2015, scored a huge critical hit and won three Judges’ Awards at the National Student Drama Festival, before appearing at Latitude Festival, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and Camden People’s Theatre, London. Now it is playing in the West End, a well-deserved accolade for a curiously wonderful story.

About LEMONS, LEMONS, LEMONS, LEMONS, LEMONS

Theatre tickets for LEMONS, LEMONS, LEMONS, LEMONS, LEMONS take you into an 80 minute play exploring the relationship between Bernadette, an ambitious lawyer, and Oliver, a chilled musician. They meet at a pet cemetery and go on to experience all the ups and downs of young love, then things change. A populist political party has won the election and passed the ‘Quietude Bill, which limits the amount of words any one person can speak to 140 a day. Bernadette and Oliver are forced relate to each other in other ways, from Morse code to drumming, but then the law is tightened even further...

Steiner covers big issues of censorship, free speech and democracy in a thought-provoking exploration of how people would react if we weren’t allowed to speak. This is a truly compelling and imaginative production that rings with truth, as intellectually exciting as it is dystopian and relevant. Sam Steiner said: "Writing 'Lemons Lemons Lemons Lemons Lemons' taught me how to be a playwright. The opportunity to revisit and grow the play all these years later and bring it to a larger audience with Josie, Aidan, Jenna and an alarmingly inspiring creative team is thrilling and confounding in equal measure. I hope it speaks to now in a way that I couldn't have predicted then. And I hope to keep learning."

The play is directed by Josie Rourke, who said: "I'm thrilled to be working with these electric actors on this brilliant play. I feel we are in a moment where - however indirectly - theatre might help us digest how we lived and changed through the extremes of the past few years. Sam's play finds the humanity in how people and couples work through extreme situations. There is the potential for great joy, fun, reflection and healing in that. "
