Starring: Audra McDonald
Billie Holiday lived an extraordinary life full of joy balanced by tragedy. It was turbulent to say the least, which makes this musical play very special. The score is stuffed full of well-known songs including God Bless the Child, What a Little Moonlight Can Do, and the tragic Strange Fruit, and Audra McDonald does them full, wonderful, rich justice.
She's no stranger to awards, being a Tony, Grammy, and Emmy Award-winner as well as one of the most popular Broadway's stars around. In fact she won a 2014 Tony for Best Actress for this magical role. But there's more. She has won a total of six Tonys, two Grammys and an Emmy as well as a 2015 National Medal of Arts presented by President Obama himself. In 2015 she was also named one of Time magazine's 100 most influential people for the year. In fact she has wowed huge crowds in a star-studded list of excellent productions including Carousel, Master Class, Ragtime, A Raisin in the Sun, Porgy and Bess, The Secret Garden, Marie Christine, Henry IV, and 110 in the Shade.
This show is all about the music and the stories, with just one cast member – Billie herself – plus the on-stage band and a real dog playing her beloved chihuahua. In 2014 the play won two Outer Critics Circle Awards nominations. Now and again something truly special hits theatreland, and the place is never quite the same again. This is tipped to be one of those events.
