La traviata - English National Opera description

La traviata is back in town for 2027, Verdi's beloved operatic masterpiece.

It's probably one of the world's best-known operas. La traviata is being given the English National Opera treatment to bring Verdi's gorgeous masterpiece to life once more, a huge treat on stage at the London Coliseum. Expect a magical blend of stunning music and a heartbreaking love story laced with personal sacrifice and social pressure. This is Peter Konwitschny's extraordinary Olivier Award-nominated production, which focuses on the story's highly emotional heart to capture the sheer enormity of the characters' feelings in a way so dramatic it is downright intense.

Gorgeous Violetta sits at the heart of Parisian society. She's prepared to give it all up for the man she loves, Alfredo. But his family is ashamed of their relationship and his dad Germont does everything he can to break them up. Violetta agrees, going back to her old life and leaving Alfredo to believe she doesn't love him. Will Alfredo discover the truth before Violetta dies? Can love survive a judgemental society? Or is their beautiful romance doomed?

A timeless tale of love, society's demands and the impossible choices lovers sometimes face is explored as the couple hurtles towards inevitable tragedy. No wonder this spectacular opera has been performed worldwide, is loved by millions, and still influences popular culture to this day. The drinking song, Let me Live the Life I Want To and a host more emotionally charged tunes bring the whole thing to startling life.

Heidi Stober plays Violetta, with Alison Langer taking over for two performances. Egor Zhuravskii, winner of the Mozart Prize at Tenor Viñas 2025, plays Alfredo. David Stout plays Germont. The conductor is Kevin John Edusei. Director Peter Konwitschny joins Revival Director PJ Harris, Set and Costume Designer Johannes Leiacker, Lighting Designer Joachim Klein and Revival Lighting Designer Marc Rosette to complete the creative team.
