La Fille du regiment description
Does love conquer all? Find out in La Fille du Régiment, Donizetti's heart-warming comedy opera.
Italian composer Gaetano Donizetti, who was born in 1797, wrote more than 70 operas, including La Fille du Régiment. This comedy about military life in the Tyrolean is always a hit with opera fans, vibrant and fun.
You'll meet the tomboy Marie, who was found on the battlefield as a baby and raised by the 21st Regiment. Her adoptive dad, Sergeant Sulpice, wants her to marry within their ranks. So the peasant Tonio, the man she loves, joins the army to be close to Marie. Then the Marquise de Berkenfield turns up, and a secret about Marie's past is revealed, putting the romance in jeopardy. Does love conquer all?
Past revivals have starred household-name celebs in the speaking role of Marie's mother-in-law-to-be, the terrifying Duchesse de Crakentorp, including Dawn French, Miranda Richardson, and Dame Kiri Te Kanawa. Packed with fun, this stylish production is born to entertain. It even includes an absolutely enormous tank.
The opera is directed by Laurent Pelly, with Juan Diego Flórez / Jonah Hoskins as Tonio and Sara Blanch as Marie. Yves Abel conducts this larger-than-life operatic treat, which marks Sara Blanch's Royal Opera debut. The cast, which can vary depending on the date, also includes Paolo Bordogna, Sonia Ganassi, and Donald Maxwell. The Libretto is by Jules-Henri Vernoy de Saint-Georges and Jean-François Alfred Bayard. Costume Designer Laurent Pelly joins Dialogue expert Agathe Mélinand, Set Designer Chantal Thomas, Lighting Designer Joël Adam and Choreographer Laura Scozzi to make it a comic opera to remember.
