Julie the Musical description

Back in the late 1600s, in France, Julie D’Aubigny was a talented opera singer, respected swordswoman and flaming bisexual. This gorgeous musical tells the story of one of history’s most outrageous LGBTQ+ icons, with brilliant Music, Book and Lyrics by Abey Bradbury.

A musical with a whole load of LGBGTQ+ attitude

Following a 2022 Fringe Tour and another smash hit tour in 2023, JULIE: The Musical returns to The Other Palace Theatre for a strictly limited season. The show is packed to the rafters with live music, comedy, tap dancing sword fights, twerking nuns, kazoo choruses and more, an absolute hoot as well as wonderfully chaotic – in fact, it’s just as chaotic as Julie D’Aubigny herself.

Celebrating a truly extraordinary life, queerness, and creating a place for yourself in a world that hasn’t been built for you, the show has already attracted a slew of nominations as well as thrilling audiences. A finalist at the Offies for Best New Musical 2024, it’s a hilarious, witty celebration of a woman who lived the LGBGTQ+ life centuries before there was such a thing. No wonder it was also Best Costume Offie Nominated in 2024, an OFFCOMM Award Winner in 2022, and was named Theatrebab Best Touring Show as well as North West End Best Of 2022.

The 2023 UK tour culminated with a week-long run at The Other Palace in July 23, now it’s back for another run - and we’re predicting it’s going to sell like hot cakes.

A bit about Abey Bradbury

Abey Bradbury, Book and Lyrics writer and composer, spent a long time researching Julie’s life and times as a French opera-singing, sword fighting bisexual . Abey is a queer neurodivergent Theatre Maker, Writer, Actor-Musician and Director who has written and helped create music with Lamphouse Theatre (Wild Boy; Musical, The Musical Musical and Alan in Wonderland), Folly & Strings (Elysium), Motley-Minded Cobblers (The Elves & The Shoemaker), Cream-Faced Loons (Midsummer Night’s Dream, King John, The Complete Works Of Shakespeare* *But Just The Deaths (and the gory bits too!)

The sound design is by India Day (she/her), set and lighting by Rebecca Cox (she/her) and stage management by Sophie Coward (she/her). The show is produced by Conor Dye (he/him).

The music is loud and joyous and the story offers something for everyone, as authentic and unapologetic as Julie herself. Abey hopes the woman they/she wrote about would be proud of the result. We’re sure she would!
