Jesus Christ Superstar (Theatre Royal Drury Lane) description
Jesus Christ Superstar is Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's landmark rock opera, retelling the final days of Jesus Christ through the eyes of Judas.
Set during the last week of Jesus's life, the story follows the mounting tension between Jesus and his disciple Judas Iscariot, whose growing doubts about the movement and its leader gradually harden into betrayal. Alongside Mary Magdalene and against a backdrop of political unrest, the sung-through drama builds through Jesus's soaring popularity, his arrest and his trial, to its devastating conclusion at the crucifixion.
First released as a concept album in 1970 before reaching Broadway and the West End, the rock opera has become one of the most enduring works in musical theatre. This staging, which began life at Regent's Park Open Air Theatre, transfers to the Theatre Royal Drury Lane following record-breaking demand for its season at the London Palladium — its first major London return since 2019. The Guardian called it a "gorgeous, thrilling, heavenly musical."
The music is by Andrew Lloyd Webber with lyrics by Tim Rice, and the celebrated score includes Heaven on Their Minds, I Don't Know How to Love Him, Gethsemane and the title number Superstar. The production is directed by Tim Sheader, with choreography by Olivier Award winner Drew McOnie and designs by Tony and Olivier Award winner Tom Scutt, reuniting the creative team behind the original Regent's Park staging.
Leading the cast as Jesus is Sam Ryder, who represented the United Kingdom at the 2022 Eurovision Song Contest with his hit Space Man, here making his West End debut.
Book now to see Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's legendary rock opera return to the heart of the West End.
