What would Charlotte Brontë think about Jane Eyre, the musical adaptation of her famous novel? We think she'd be thrilled by this UK premiere, on stage at Southwark Playhouse Elephant for a limited run. The show is co-directed by a couple of stars: director John Caird (Les Misérables, Spirited Away) - who also collaborated with composer and lyricist Paul Gordon (Daddy Long Legs, Pride & Prejudice) to write the musical - and the award-winning Broadway actor Megan McGinnis (The Diary of Anne Frank, Les Misérables, Beauty and the Beast, Little Women, Daddy Long Legs, Beetlejuice).
Expect a powerful, timeless feminist romance rich in gothic drama and stuffed with supernatural accents, starring a woman who is as vulnerable as she is witty, loveable, strong, and grimly determined. The intimate venue adds even more ambience to an iconic plot deeply influenced by the author's own life. Set in Thornfield Hall, we follow Jane through her traumatic childhood to her emergence as a tough independent woman, through the complexities of her relationship with Edward Rochester, the secrets, the betrayals, and the happy ending.
The show had its world premiere in Toronto during 1996. It hit Broadway with a bang at the turn of the 21st century, receiving nominations for five Tony Awards. This is its UK debut, marking the production's 30th anniversary.
Adam Blanshay, the producer of the UK premiere, is apparently delighted with the fresh staging, the emotional power, and the way the story still resonates in our modern world around 180 years after it was first published in 1847.
