Puccini's Il Trittico brings three one-act operas, a tragedy, a story of faith and a comedy, together in a single evening at the Royal Opera House.
In Il tabarro, set aboard a barge on the Seine in Paris, Giorgetta is still mourning the death of her baby and seeks comfort in an affair, while her husband Michele grows suspicious. Suor Angelica takes place in a convent, where the young nun Angelica is visited by her aunt, the Princess, who brings news of the child Angelica was forced to give up. The evening ends in Florence with Gianni Schicchi, in which a family hoping to inherit a fortune asks the quick-witted Schicchi to help rewrite a dead relative's will, without realising he has plans of his own.
Il Trittico had its world premiere at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in December 1918. Il tabarro is based on Didier Gold's play La Houppelande, while Gianni Schicchi takes its central character from Dante's Divine Comedy. The score includes some of Puccini's best-known music, among them Lauretta's aria 'O mio babbino caro', Angelica's 'Senza mamma' and Rinuccio's 'Firenze è come un albero fiorito'. For many years the three operas were often staged separately, but they are increasingly presented together as Puccini intended. This production was first seen at Covent Garden in 2011 and was revived in 2016. It is sung in Italian with English surtitles.
The production is directed by Olivier Award winner Richard Jones, with a different set designer for each opera: Ultz for Il tabarro, Miriam Buether for Suor Angelica and John Macfarlane for Gianni Schicchi. Costumes are by Nicky Gillibrand, with lighting by D. M. Wood and Mimi Jordan Sherin. The libretti are by Giuseppe Adami (Il tabarro) and Giovacchino Forzano (Suor Angelica and Gianni Schicchi). Speranza Scappucci conducts.
The cast features soprano Natalya Romaniw, baritone Étienne Dupuis, tenor SeokJong Baek, soprano Ermonela Jaho, who sang the title role of Suor Angelica in this production's 2016 revival, and bass-baritone Bryn Terfel. They are joined by Sir Thomas Allen, Elena Zilio, Raehann Bryce-Davis, Katia Ledoux, Elena Villalón and Ailish Tynan.
