Girls description

Set in Nigeria during 2014, Girls explores friendship under terrifying circumstances.

Girls is an award-winner of a play by Theresa Ikoko, on stage at the Young Vic Theatre for a strictly limited London run and directed by the winner of 2026's JMK Award, Ewa Dina.

The plot is set in Nigeria in 2014, where a militant insurgency unfolds to reveal a dramatic and deeply human story about friendship, survival, and the impossible choices we're sometimes forced to deal with. You'll meet Tisana, Haleema, and Ruha. As best friends they're busy being ordinary teenagers, obsessed with celebs, carbs and sex positions. Then they're kidnapped by militant insurgents and their future suddenly becomes extremely uncertain. They only have each other, but as the fear takes hold and religious differences begin to eat away at their friendship, will their bond break?

This brilliant piece of drama awaits you at a venue known and loved for its focus on diversity and inclusivity, a welcoming space whatever your gender. The Young Vic champions new talent and often showcases works by emerging female directors and actors, respected for top quality, socially relevant productions.

Ewa Dina makes her Young Vic debut directing this powerful tale of friendship under fire. The playwright Theresa Ikoko won the 2015 Alfred Fagon Award, 2016's George Devine Award, and was a finalist for the Verity Bargate Award. And we have set and costume design from RaphaƩ Memon, together promising something seriously special.

To see a powerful play set in horrific times, buy Girls tickets and make your way to the West End for an experience to remember.
