Gerry & Sewell is based on Jonathan Tulloch's brilliant book, The Season Ticket, which was made into the cult movie Purely Belter. This is Olivier Award-winner Jamie Eastlake's new adaptation of the beloved story, on stage in the capital for a short run after selling out across the North East of England.
The play, which began life in a 60 seat pub theatre up north, combines live music, crazy dog puppets, Wor Flags and celebrity cameos in a wild, hilarious and heartfelt way, creating a beautiful tribute to the black-and-whites. This one's for the Toon, and for anyone who's ever chased after something truly meaningful.
The story goes like this. Gerry and Sewell live in Gateshead on the River Tyne's gritty south bank. The men have nothing but their dreams of a season ticket for the football club they adore. But years of austerity have taken their toll and they're forced to watch, horrified, as the club is sold by a softie southern businessman who cares more about the merch than the game. Things are not going well until they decide they're going to get season tickets no matter what. On a mission, the men set off to do whatever it takes.
The show stars the brilliant original cast members Dean Logan as Gerry, Jack Robertson as Sewell and Becky Clayburn as Tyneside, with Erin Mullen as Bridget. Jamie Eastlake directs, with Music from Aidan Tulloch and Sets by Richard, Rosie and Joe Power.
