Gentlemen Prefer Blondes returns to London as a one-off concert staging of the classic Broadway musical comedy, starring Megan Hilty and Rachel Tucker.
Lorelei Lee, a showgirl from Little Rock, Arkansas, sets sail from New York to Paris with her best friend Dorothy Shaw. Engaged to the wealthy Gus Esmond, Lorelei spends the crossing collecting admirers and diamonds, while Dorothy looks for a man she actually likes. By the time the ship reaches France, both women have more romantic complications than they bargained for.
The musical opened on Broadway in 1949 with Carol Channing as Lorelei, and the 1953 film version starred Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell. Its score includes Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend, A Little Girl from Little Rock and Bye Bye Baby. This concert production at the London Palladium features large-scale tap numbers and an orchestra of 30 musicians, conducted by Alan Williams. The production is presented by Darren Bell Productions and Cuffe & Taylor.
The musical has a book by Anita Loos and Joseph Fields, music by Jule Styne and lyrics by Leo Robin. Loos also wrote the 1925 novel on which the show is based. Tony Award winner Warren Carlyle directs and choreographs, with set and costume design by Rebecca Brower and lighting by Zoe Spurr.
Megan Hilty plays Lorelei Lee, a role she previously played in the 2012 New York City Center Encores! production. A Tony Award nominee, her Broadway credits include Wicked, 9 to 5: The Musical and Death Becomes Her. Rachel Tucker plays Dorothy Shaw; she is known for playing Elphaba in Wicked in the West End and on Broadway, and her other credits include Come From Away and Sunset Boulevard. Further casting is to be announced.
