Gem of the Ocean description

Another shining jewel in the Young Vic's latest season, Gem of the Ocean is powerful stuff.

Don't miss Gem of the Ocean. Based on August Wilson's play of the same name and set in 1904, it's directed by Nadia Fall. This is the first book in the author's Pittsburgh Cycle, which chronicles the experiences of African-American people throughout the 1900s, and it is known and loved as a classic contribution to US drama.

The scene is Pittsburgh, USA where we meet young Citizen Barlow from Alabama, who is camped outside the house of a woman who's support he desperately needs. Can the 285 year old former slave, sage and healer Aunt Ester help Citizen face up to the challenges of his past and the ruthless sheriff Caesar, and will he be saved? The play explores themes of resistance, oppression, community, redemption and the search for freedom in the Hill District community, where memories of slavery and the South still resonate.

The play follows on from Young Vic Artistic Director Nadia Fall's critically acclaimed production of King Hedley II. Don't miss this wonderful piece of drama, which will give you a better understanding of African-American people's experience, their enduring quest for freedom and justice.

Buy Gem of the Ocean tickets to see a classic play that resonates powerfully, inspiring us to think critically about the issues we face today.
