Bryony Lavery’s Tony Award-winning play, Frozen, sees a mother and a serial killer try to reconcile their unforgiveable differences over the murder of a young girl. It sees a psychiatrist try to understand the events in question and attempt to breed forgiveness in both of the protagonists. This is a far cry from the Disney film of the same name, as it comes to Theatre Royal Haymarket for a twelve-week, limited season in February 2018.

Rhona is ten years old when she goes missing. In the years that follow, Frozen charts the story of her mother Nancy, her serial killer Ralph and an American psychiatrist, Agnetha, who comes to England to examine the incarcerated murderer. Each of their three lives slowly crosses over, perspectives shift and each one tries to come to terms with the idea of forgiveness. Frozen thaws years of emotional paralysis in a work that examines the concept of acceptance from the victim’s family, as well as acceptance for oneself, over the most inexplicable of crimes.

The Guardian named her as “one of the best but most consistently underrated playwrights in the country” until Lavery brought Frozen to off-Broadway in 2004, where it achieved critical acclaim and commercial success, including one Tony Award and a further nomination. After thirteen years the harrowing production about forgiveness and emotional paralysis now comes for the first time to London’s West End – it first played Birmingham Repertory Theatre in 1998 and went on to the National Theatre in 2002.

In the starring roles are Suranne Jones (Doctor Foster, Scott & Bailey) and Jason Watkins (Line Of Duty, Taboo, W1A) as mother Nancy and killer Ralph respectively. Neither of the stars are strangers to the stage – Watkins is an Oliver Award nominee (for his athletic, comedic turn in A Servant To Two Masters – a play that was later adapted into the smash hit success One Man, Two Guvnors, which received its West End debut at Theatre Royal Haymarket). Jones is a WhatsOnStage Award nominee (Beautiful Thing) and the most recent recipient of the BAFTA TV Award for Best Actress (Doctor Foster). Add in director Jonathan Munby, whose most recent production of King Lear plays Chichester Festival Theatre with Sir Ian McKellen in the eponymous title role, and everything is in place for an extraordinary, exceptional production.

Frozen follows on at Theatre Royal Haymarket from Venus in Fur, cementing the theatre as a venue that attracts the best of today’s British stars of TV & Film to tread the boards. The production will run for just twelve weeks and, after building on the Haymarket’s recent successes, is guaranteed to sell out fast.
