Fatherland description

Associate Artist at the Lyric Hammersmith, Simon Stephens, returns with one of his latest works, Fatherland. The show premiered at the Royal Exchange Theatre, Manchester in July 2017 and is a co-production with Frantic Assembly(co-founded by current Artistic Director Scott Graham). Fatherland was also created in conjunction with Karl Hyde, part of the electronic music group Underworld.

A collage of words, music and movement, Fatherland features a cast of 13, a portrayal of contemporary fatherhood and all of its associated complications. The show is inspired by conversations between fathers and sons in the creators’ home towns in the heart of the country – Corby, Kidderminster and Stockport. Fatherland looks at identity, masculinity and what it means to be weighed down by expectation.

Stephens and Graham are best known for their collaboration on A Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time. Stephens is also well-known for adapting works including The Threepenny Opera, The Seagull, A Doll’s House and The Cherry Orchard.

The premiere in Manchester was met with critical acclaim, showing the true power of verbatim theatre. The show plays at Lyric Hammersmith from 25 May 2018.
