Evita – Heartbreak and joy in Argentina

Many people consider Evita to be the best of the Rice and Lloyd Webber bunch, and you're in for a huge treat this time around as the stunning-voiced chart topper Marti Pellow, from the band Wet Wet Wet, takes the male lead as Che. He's a legend in his own lifetime, with numerous theatre hits under his belt as well as a star-studded pop career. Think Chicago, The Witches Of Eastwick, Blood Brothers and The War Of The Worlds and you get the picture.

The lovely Portuguese actress, singer and composer Madalena Alberto plays Evita in a musical that has already gathered more than twenty major awards during its long and successful history as well as being transformed into an Oscar winning movie starring Madonna and Antonio Banderas. As a result the show has become a genuine theatrical icon, with tunes to match. Don't Cry For Me Argentina. On On This Night of a Thousand Stars. You Must Love Me. Another Suitcase in Another Hall... this really is a little bit of musical heaven on earth!

What's the plot? Eva Peron was the beautiful ex-actress wife of the former Argentinian dictator Juan Peron. She came from a humble background but ended up extraordinarily rich and powerful, and the people loved her... so much so that she was hailed as Argentina's spiritual leader. A legendary figure in the nation's history, she had many political critics. Set to run as Vice President of Argentina in 1951, cancer prevented her achieving her ambitions and eventually killed her in 1952. It was a national tragedy, and she has never been forgotten.

The show began life in London's theatreland back in 1978, to instant acclaim. It won an Olivier award for Best Musical and a Tony for Best Musical on Broadway. It stayed on stage until 1986 and, apart from a brief West End revival in 2006, didn't reappear until 2013 despite the movie's astonishing success.

This is a show with several versions. The one you'll see is the smash hit touring version by Bill Kenwright and Bob Tomson, which delighted critics and audiences alike on its 2013 tour.
