August: Osage County description

One family, one reunion, every secret laid bare.

Following a sudden family crisis, the fiercely dysfunctional Weston family reunites at their Oklahoma home. As old wounds reopen and long-buried secrets come to light, simmering resentments erupt in an unfiltered portrait of family life, by turns darkly funny and deeply moving.

Widely regarded as one of the defining plays of the 21st century, August: Osage County won the 2008 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Award for Best Play. First staged by Chicago's Steppenwolf Theatre Company in 2007 before runs on Broadway and at London's National Theatre, this production marks the play's first major West End revival and its return to London for the first time in almost 20 years. Tracy Letts adapted the play into the 2013 film directed by John Wells, with Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts both earning Academy Award nominations.

Written by Tracy Letts, who received both the Pulitzer Prize and a Tony Award for the play, the production is directed by Jeremy Herrin, whose acclaimed work includes People, Places and Things, Wolf Hall and Best of Enemies.

Lesley Manville plays the Weston matriarch, Violet. A two-time Olivier Award winner and 2026 Tony Award winner for Best Actress, she is known for her Oscar and BAFTA-nominated role in Phantom Thread and her Emmy and BAFTA-nominated portrayal of Princess Margaret in The Crown. Anna Maxwell Martin plays her daughter, Barbara Fordham; a two-time BAFTA Award winner for Bleak House and Poppy Shakespeare, she also won an International Emmy Award for Until I Kill You.
