Assassins description

Sondheim collaborated with John Weidman to create this 1990 musical, which cut its teeth off-Broadway before crossing the Atlantic to London's Donmar Warehouse. The winner of five Tony awards, it's a hugely entertaining black comedy tracing thirteen would-be murderers, all of whom attempted to assassinate the president of the USA, but only four of whom succeeded. Most people think of assassins as obsessive, crazy, misguided and even evil. But are they merely victims of the American Dream? It's a fascinating proposition that puts a whole new slant on the actions of people who might just turn out to have more in common with each other – and all of us – than you might like to think.

The resulting musical is set to raise the rafters from 21st November 2014 to early March 2015. British comedian Catherine Tate takes the role of Sarah Jane Moore until 8th February 2015, after which she'll be replaced. She's joined by a glittering comedy cast including Carly Bawden, Simon Lipkin, Mike McShane, Andy Nyman and David Roberts.

The production takes the form of a murderous carnival game, a revue-style portrait of the women and men who, throughout history, have attempted to assassinate various American presidents. Charmingly, the show tunes vary to reflect the popular music of each different era, making it extra-evocative.

The show is designed by Soutra Gilmour, the lighting design is by Neil Austin, the sound design comes courtesy of by Gregory Clarke, the musical supervision and direction is by Alan Williams and the hair and make-up design is by Richard Mawbey.

As well as several fictional characters who help tell the story, the real-life historical assassins portrayed include John Wilkes Booth, who killed Abraham Lincoln, and his accomplice David Herold, plus the people who either threatened the lives of or killed presidents James Garfield, William McKinley, Franklin D. Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy, Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, Gerald Ford and more.

Expect a collection of amazing show tunes and you won't be disappointed. The Ballad of Booth, How I Saved Roosevelt, The Gun Song, The Ballad of Czolgosz, Unworthy of Your Love and more will have you singing in your seat... at the same time wondering why singing along to a tune about murder is so entertaining!
