Oscar Wilde's dazzlingly witty four-act comedy play, An Ideal Husband, is as sharp and satisfying as ever, back at the Lyric Hammersmith with a fresh new face thanks to a brave new production.

Exploring themes of blackmail, political corruption, scandal and honour, it took to the stage for the first time way back in 1895 at London's Haymarket Theatre. The play's first West End revival, presented by George Alexander in May 1914, was the first in a series of revivals and adaptations in theatres across the world as well as on TV, in movies, and on the radio. Over a hundred years later, it never fails to delight. It just goes to show, times might change, but basic human nature remains the same!

You'll meet Sir Robert Chiltern, a perfect modern gentleman whose taste is always immaculate and whose reputation has always been unimpeachable... so far. But everything starts to unravel when the gossipy Mrs Cheveley, who has a taste for the dramatic, turns up bearing secrets that could destroy him. Love, betrayal, and deception are the name of the game as this hugely popular Wilde play unfolds, a masterpiece in sharp wit and glittering social satire, beautifully reimagined for a contemporary London setting. This powerful new production of Oscar Wilde's beloved classic is directed by the Lyric Hammersmith's Associate Director, Nicholai La Barrie (God of Carnage, Aladdin), and the Associate Director is Gráinne Flynn.
