Amadeus description
Peter Shaffer's iconic play Amadeus is back, starring two extraordinary Welsh actors.
This time around Amadeus is directed by Jeremy Herrin. Michael Sheen (The Passion, Nye, Our Town and numerous brilliant TV roles) plays the composer Salieri and Callum Scott Howells (It's A Sin, Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club) plays Mozart. And this is the first major revival in more than ten years as well as the first time two Welsh actors have played the legendary roles. Set Design from Bunny Christie, Costume Design by Lez Brotherston and Casting by Sam Jones CDG also contribute to creating something extra special.
Roll back time to 1820 in Vienna, where a famous composer meets his nemesis. He's called Antonio Salieri, a man whose talent has earned him status and success. Then he meets the supremely gifted yet eccentric, vulgar and childish prodigy Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Salieri believes a gift like Mozart's must be divine. Infuriated that the precious gift has been given to the young man he's obsessed with yet despises, he dedicates himself to destroying his rival.
The play originally premiered in 1979 and has since become a classic in modern theatre. It has won numerous awards including a Tony for Best Play, and was made into a hit movie in 1984. The play's exploration of complex emotions and moral dilemmas still resonate with audiences, a powerful commentary on the human condition and the world of art.
