Aladdin Pantomime description
Back in 2022 the award-winning writer Sonia Jalaly and director Nicholai La Barrie created an unforgettable version of Jack and the Beanstalk. Now another classic story gets their special panto treatment, bringing fresh magic and excitement to the ancient tale of Aladdin, from The Thousand and One Nights.
Once heard, never forgotten – no wonder Disney’s animated movie and countless stage and panto productions have presented the story since it was first published in English during the 1700s.
The original story goes like this...
Aladdin is a lazy boy who meets an African magician. He claims he’s the boy’s uncle. He takes Aladdin to a cave where there’s a magic lamp, shutting him in the cave with it. Inside the lamp is a powerful genie, who Aladdin summons by rubbing the lamp with a ring the magician gave him. The genie grants Aladdin’s wishes and he becomes rich, building a beautiful palace and marrying the sultan’s daughter. He defeats the African magician and his evil younger brother, and lives happily ever after.
An exceptional writer and director in the mix
Jalay’s version promises to add lots of extra spice to the old story, giving audiences something extra-special for the festive season. She’s a writer and theatre maker from Manchester and a member of the BBC Writersroom Comedy Room, creating fun regularly for CBBC and CBeebies. Her work has delighted audiences at Kiln Theatre, Donmar Warehouse, Company Three, Paines Plough and more.
Theatre director, film director and MOBO Fellow Nicholai La Barrie has worked on Tina - The Tina Turner Musical, Statements After An Arrest Under The Immorality Act, Liar Heretic Thief at the Lyric Hammersmith, White at the Edinburgh Festival and many more.
