Adriana Mater - English National Opera description

You'll adore English National Opera's acclaimed Adriana Mater by Kaija Saariaho and Amin Maalouf.

Adriana Mater from ENO is heading for the London Coliseum, showcasing Kaija Saariaho's gorgeous score and Amin Maalouf's remarkable libretto. The opera explores powerful themes of motherhood, trauma, mercy, forgiveness, resilience and hope, and how it's possible to break violent cycles with compassion.

The action unfurls against a background of violent civil war, a gripping tale of survival against the odds. The plot follows a mother who is determined to protect her son Yonas from the violence surrounding his birth. But Yonas finds out the truth about his dad and vows revenge. Will the characters find hope in an impossible situation? Can their beloved country break the ugly cycle of male violence? It's a story that'll stick with you for a long time afterwards.

This rarely-staged masterpiece and ENO debut unites ENO Artistic Director Annilese Miskimmon with the brilliant Music Director Designate André de Ridder, the first time they've collaborated. The English Translation comes from Aleksi Barrière. It's conducted by de Ridder and stars the brilliant Kristina Stanek as Adriana, the lead role, with Caspar Singh as Yonas, Leigh Melrose as Tsargo, and Lauren Fagan as Refka.

Kaija Saariaho was named Greatest Living Composer in BBC Music Magazine's 2019 poll. She died in 2023, a tragic loss for the world of music. You can experience Adriana Mater as a stand-alone story, or book tickets for the ENO's latest production of Tosca and see the other half of the story as well, the perfect pairing resolving to an ending you'll love.
