A Night with Janis Joplin description

Meet Janis Joplin, the first queen of rock ‘n’ roll, and the women who lit her fire. This show’s coming our way direct from Broadway, the UK premiere of A Night with Janis Joplin, a musical so good it has been described as rocking the house with a fervour that’s riveting.

Janis Joplin’s sister Laura agrees, calling it a “full belted memory that drives joy into my heart and tears from my eyes”.

Two remarkable women ace the starring role

Starring musician Mary Bridget Davies as Janice Joplin for evening performances and West End royalty Sharon Sexton for the matinees, this is a multi award-winning show paying homage to an inspiring woman who ended up one of rock ‘n’ roll’s greatest legends.

Mary Bridget Davies is no stranger to the role, playing Joplin for both the touring and Broadway productions and getting a Tony nomination for Best Lead Actress in a Musical. In fact Davies is a musician in her own right. Her band The Mary Bridget Davies Group released an album with original songs in 2012 titled Wanna Feel Somethin. Sharon Sexton (Bat Out of Hell, Billy Elliott) is an experienced musical theatre performer, commercial singer and cabaret artist. Both women ace the role of Janis with their powerful voices and big, bold stage presence.

A musical with a stellar background

A Night with Janis Joplin originally premiered way back in 2011, touring to rave reviews for two years and smashing box office records. In October 2013 it hit Broadway to yet more rave reviews and it toured the USA for years afterwards. In 2022 it even proved a big hit in Japan.

The show is fuelled with unforgettable songs like “Me and Bobby McGee,” “Piece of My Heart”, “Mercedes Benz”, “Cry Baby” and “Summertime”, complete with a remarkable cast and memorable breakout performances.

A Night with Janice Joplin has a Book and direction by Randy Johnson, choreography by Patricia Wilcox and casting by Anne Vosser. The show is produced by Michael Cohl, Tony Smith and the estate of Janis Joplin and Jeffrey Jampol for Jam, Inc, with UK General Management by MPSI Ltd.

Janis Joplin was a comet that burned too bright to last. She exploded onto the music scene in 1967 and found fame more or less overnight to become the acknowledged queen of rock and roll thanks to her enormous voice and outstanding impact on stage. But she was also troubled, like many a genius, and her star fell far too early, as tragic as the loss of fellow geniuses Amy Winehouse and Jimi Hendrix. As a must-see headliner she lit up the Monterey festival and aced Woodstock. This celebration of her life and music will warm your heart and thrill you to bits.
