A Midsummer Night's Dream returns to the Globe Theatre in a 90-minute production made especially for young audiences.
Shakespeare's comedy follows a group of amateur performers rehearsing a play, while fairies and animals run riot in the woods around them. Four young lovers leave the strict rules of the city, and their digital comforts, behind and head into a forest where nothing is quite what it seems. What follows is a tale of love, mischief and transformation, with plenty of magic along the way. At 90 minutes, this fast-paced version is designed as a first introduction to Shakespeare.
The staging is the latest production of Playing Shakespeare with Deutsche Bank, the Globe's flagship education programme. Each year the project offers more than 26,000 free tickets to pupils aged 11 to 16 at non-selective state secondary schools in London and Birmingham, alongside subsidised tickets for schools across the country. The production is designed for students from Key Stage 3 upwards as they work towards their GCSEs. Over 21 years the partnership has delivered more than 500 performances and over 360,000 free tickets. Public performances run alongside the schools' shows, including captioned and BSL-integrated, audio-described and relaxed performances.
The production is directed by Lucy Cuthbertson, the Globe's Director of Education, who has led its learning and family work since 2019 and has 30 years' experience of making theatre with and for young people. For Playing Shakespeare she previously directed Romeo and Juliet in 2024 and 2026 and Macbeth in 2025. Her family shows at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, Midsummer Mechanicals and Rough Magic, were co-produced with Splendid Productions and both nominated for Olivier Awards. She is a founder member of Ridiculusmus Theatre Company. Jessie Warbeck is assistant director.
