A Midsummer Night's Dream: Globe Theatre description
See A Midsummer Night's Dream, a slice of pure Shakespeare heaven at the Globe.
A Midsummer Night’s Dream is back at the Globe Theatre, a landmark new production directed by Headlong Theatre’s Holly Race Roughan and co-directed by Naeem Hayat, (The Comedy of Errors 2023/24). It's on stage at the candlelit Sam Wanamaker Playhouse for the first time, the perfect setting for this beloved Shakespeare comedy.
Four young lovers are desperate to escape from their tyrannical society. Meanwhile, in the forest they flee to, fairy life is in an uproar. The Fairy King and Queen, powerful Oberon and Titania, are fighting over who owns a stolen child. The worse their rages get, the more people are sucked in to the couple's jealousy-fuelled battle. Ultimately, day turns into night, reality gives way to illusion, there's snow in the middle of summer, and the dream is fast becoming a nightmare.
This is the first collaboration between Shakespeare's Globe and the touring theatre company Headlong since they wowed audiences with Henry V in 2022, the production described as 'extraordinary'. Striking new staging is the name of the game, something Headlong is loved for. They stage plays as though they're new, however old or well-known they are, which makes their work hugely entertaining. In this case, the beloved story is turned on its head, inviting us to take a fresh look.
This darker version of the classic comedy is a production by Shakespeare’s Globe and Headlong, with Bristol Old Vic and Leeds Playhouse.
