A Dickens of a Christmas description
A Dickens of a Christmas is a quick-fire comedy built from the lesser-known Christmas tales of Charles Dickens.
The action unfolds over a single Christmas Eve. Goblins in a church tower show a humble messenger glimpses of the future, a professor accepts a ghost's offer to erase the memories of his past, and strange, otherworldly children roam the streets of London. As the hours run down to midnight, a young couple, a sick student, a fugitive and an eccentric family all wait to learn what fate has in store, while a wedding set for Christmas Day hangs in the balance. Hearts need to change and souls need saving before the clock strikes twelve.
The show is a new adaptation of the Christmas stories Dickens wrote beyond A Christmas Carol, with the performers switching between many characters and the comedy kept at a brisk pace. It is staged in Park90, the studio space at Park Theatre in Finsbury Park, runs for 65 minutes and is recommended for ages 10+. The production's content guidance mentions references to suicide, infant death and bereavement, as well as the use of haze. Earlier productions by the same company have won an OffWestEnd Assessor's Choice Award and featured in The Independent's Gems of Edinburgh Fringe 2024, and critics have called its previous work "ingeniously funny" (All That Dazzles), "furiously fast, painfully funny" (The Stage) and "spectacularly joyful and silly" (The Independent).
The adaptation is co-written and co-directed by Caleb Barron and Ellie Jay Cooper. It is produced by the award-winning company Maybe You Like It in association with Park Theatre, and brings the company's high-energy, multi-role style of storytelling to Dickens' festive writing.
