She is the Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll, boasting eleven Grammy Awards and 180 million record sales around the world. Now, at long last, Tina Turner is bringing a musical about her life to the West End. She’s Simply The Best!
TINA is a musical about the life and successes of the eponymous recording artist. Born in Nutbush, Tennessee, Turner shot to fame in the late 1950s once she partnered with Ike Turner, a partnership that lasted in the mid-1970s and produced such hits as River Deep, Mountain High and Nutbush City Limits. All these songs and more promise to be features in this musical that guarantees to get you out of your seat and dancing!
Turner has teamed up with Olivier Award-winning playwright Katori Hall, whose show The Mountaintop won her Best New Play in 2010, and director Phyllida Lloyd, who directed both the original West End and subsequent film version of Mamma Mia!. Lloyd collaborates once again with choreographer Anthony van Laast, musical supervisor Nicholas Skilbeck and set & costume designer Mark Thompson, all of whom helped shaped the ABBA production into the worldwide smash that has played globally for the last 18 years.
Turner’s musical, TINA, will see its world première in London’s Aldwych Theatre, which until recently played host to another legendary female musician. Carole King’s Beautiful played at the theatre for just under three years, scoring two Olivier Award nominations and a recently opened UK and Ireland tour. Let’s hope that some of that luck rubs off on this latest show – if the songs are anything to go by, the likes of What’s Love Got To Do With It and Proud Mary are sure to wow the critics and public alike.
While the cast have yet to be announced, there is no shortage of incredible talent that could easily step in Turner’s shoes. Currently running musicals such as Dreamgirls, Motown and Thriller each contain numbers that have reached the same levels of stardom as Turner’s songs, so whoever gets the part is sure to give another powerful performance.
TINA is a musical that dares to defy the bounds of age, gender and race, with inspiration from a woman who still holds the record for the most concert tickets ever sold by any performer in history. Turner’s career spans seven decades and even has the accolade of being a Bond soundtrack star, so adding musical success to her list of achievements will be the icing on the cake. Book those tickets now – they’ve already gone on sale for 21 March – 16 June 2018 and are sure to go like hotcakes!
