The Winter's Tale description

We're delighted to introduce the Kenneth Branagh Theatre Company, purveyors of a potent blend of particularly fine classics, comedies and new plays. Branagh himself, Rob Ashford, Christopher Oram, Rob Brydon, Judi Dench, Lily James, Richard Madden and a host more serious theatre talent take to the stage for this year-long season of quality theatre. This is just one of five special plays by Branagh's team, all on stage at the Garrick from late 2015 to late 2016.

The Winter's Tale, which plays at the Garrick theatre between 17th October 2015 and 16th January 2016, was originally published way back in 1623. Some believe it's a comedy, some classify it as a romance, others believe it's a 'problem play', since the first three acts are an exercise in brilliantly intense psychological drama, the last two acts are rich in comedy and the ending is a happy one.

The play has been produced countless times over the centuries, revived in different forms to suit different cultural and social mores, trends and fashions. Amongst others, David Garrick adapted the story in 1754, renaming it Florizel and Perdita.

There have been a couple of movie versions, a 1910 silent film and the 1967 classic starring Laurence Harvey as Leontes. A critically acclaimed TV version was screened by the BBC in 1981, produced by Jonathan Miller, and there have been several more since. In 2014 the talented choreographer Christopher Wheeldon and the Royal Ballet created a full-length dance version that wowed audiences at London's Royal Opera House.

This latest Branagh-led production is billed as a beauty, breathing fresh life into an ancient story that will always appeal to our hearts and minds. If you're a seasoned Shakespeare fan, you'll love it. If you've never seen a play of his on stage you'll be absolutely thrilled. And the Bard himself would be proud.

It's colourful and compelling, thought-provoking and enormously entertaining. A real treat awaits you, classy and cool. Don't miss it!
