Jesus Christ Superstar – Dazzling musical entertainment

After successful runs at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre from 2016 – 17, the latest, greatest production of Jesus Christ Superstar transfers to the Barbican Theatre in 2019, and it's only running for 60 performances. Get your skates on if you don't want to miss this pantechnicon of a musical, a show loved by millions that has rarely been off the world's stage since 1970.

This exceptional production of Jesus Christ Superstar won the Olivier Award for best musical revival in 2017. It also won the famously hard-to-get Evening Standard Award for best musical. The open air version scored a massive hit at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre, a production that had an unusual festival-style feel to it. It was an equally big hit at the Lyric Opera of Chicago in spring 2018. Now this fantastic musical theatre classic is transferring to London's Barbican in summer 2019, for a strictly limited season.

When did the magic first begin? Roll back time to 1970, when Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice penned a rock album about the last 7 days in the life of Jesus. It was a massive hit. By 1971 it was lighting up the Broadway stage for the first time. By 1972 it was on the West End stage, where it stayed for eight years, one of the most popular musicals of all time. This latest version is dubbed as ‘adrenaline-pumping’ by the New York Times, and it delivers a particularly powerful experience.

Celebrating 45 years since Lloyd Webber and Rice wrote the musical, this fresh adaptation is an award-winner of a revival. It includes well-known musical theatre tunes like I Don’t Know How to Love Him, Gethsemane and Superstar itself, and it dramatises the last week of Jesus’ life, examining the role of Judas and exploring the two men's infamous struggle.

Expect fabulous rock music played by talented musicians, brilliant contemporary design, thrilling choreography and more, all thanks to an excellent creative team. The show is both energetic and emotionally charged, and that means it's more or less unforgettable.

Big thanks go to Timothy Sheader, the Director, and designer Tom Scutt. Drew McOnie is the Choreographer, and Tom Deering the Musical Supervisor. Lee Curran is the lighting designer and Nick Lidster is the sound designer, working for Autograph. The fight director is Kate Waters, and Barbara Houseman is the Associate Director.

Tickets for a show this good, this well known and loved, always sell fast. Buy yours as soon as you can to experience a production you will never forget.
