East Is East description

The story? George expects his family to follow traditional Pakistani ways, but his UK-born children have very different ideas...

Pakistani chip-shop owner George Khan, who his children call 'Genghis', is committed to giving them a strict Muslim upbringing in grim, grey 1970s Salford, Greater Manchester. But the kids are less than willing to play ball. Inevitably their mother, Ella, is caught in the middle. The tension in their home soon reaches breaking point as Ella is divided between the wishes of her husband and her own views about free will and freedom of choice.

The popular, very funny and talented Jane Horrocks, star of The Rise and Fall of Little Voice, plays Ella in a heart warming, chaotic and hilarious modern classic about coming of age in multiracial England. And the playwright himself, Ayub Khan Din, brings vivid new flavour to a story that has delighted countless thousands of movie fans and theatregoers since he first wrote it. Jane Horrocks is well known and loved for her role in Absolutely Fabulous and has also starred as Annie Oakley in the Young Vic's 2009 smash hit version of Annie Get Your Gun as well as The Good Soul Of Szechuan in 2008 and Absurd Person Singular in 2007.

The play premièred at London's Royal Court Theatre back in 1997 before being transformed into a film, and this revival is set to delight audiences all over again. The story is proving evergreen, loved just as much by subsequent generations as it was the first time around.

The play is the second in the Jamie Lloyd season at London's Trafalgar Studios, a joint venture between the director and the Ambassador Theatre Group. And it's the first time the playwright has appeared in his own play. Direction is by Sam Yates and the fun starts in October 2014.

East is East always provokes discussion and debate, a contemporary classic that raises fascinating and complex issues that don't seem to go away, just as relevant to today's multicultural British society as they ever were. Funny and touching, chaotic and dramatic, the involvement of the playwright is tipped to “add even more weight and authenticity to this major revival of his semi-autobiographical play.
