Big the Musical is being billed as an unforgettable theatrical experience. Dazzling, energetic, heartfelt and contemporary, it's also a musical for people of every age. So what's the plot?
Young Josh Baskin is sick of being an awkward twelve year old kid. He can't wait to grow up and feel at ease in the world, at home in his life. When he sees a Zoltar machine at the fairground, where you put money in and make a wish, Josh asks if he can become 'big'. Lo and behold, that's exactly what happens.
At first terrified, Josh soon starts to enjoy himself. He gets a job, and a girlfriend – all of which is hilarious – but ultimately realises being a grown up is a whole lot more complicated and difficult than he'd anticipated. The lessons are these: we all need the space to grow up at our own pace, in our own time. When we try to rush it, things can go terribly, hysterically wrong. And children have a whole lot of important things to teach adults, things we've forgotten.
The musical is a treat for the eyes with a brilliant Zoltar and a giant floor piano that you'll remember fondly if you've seen the film. It's high energy stuff, packed with singing and dancing. And it's one of those rare treats, a genuine family musical designed to entertain everyone from little kids to OAPs.
Better still, there's a star-studded cast including The Wanted singer and Strictly Come Dancing champion Jay McGuiness. It's joyful, spectacular, non-stop fun. It's unforgettable seeing the film translated so cleverly for the stage. Perfect for the big kid inside all of us!
Show tunes include Can't Wait, Talk to Her / Carnival / Zoltar Speaks, This Isn't Me, I Want to Go Home, The Time of Your Life / Fun, Josh's Welcome / Here We Go Again, Do You Want to Play Games / Stars, Stars, Stars and lots more.
