A View from The Bridge description

The play was first staged in September 1955, a single act drama. It wasn't a success on Broadway so Miller revised it to create two acts, an inspired production that's still famous to this day. The playwright's two act version premièred in London's West End, directed by Peter Brook, in the autumn of 1956 to great acclaim.

Originally a smash hit at the The Young Vic theatre and specially stripped back for this revival, it's due at Wyndham's Theatre in 2015 with Mark Strong returning as the troubled longshoreman Eddie Carbone. The remarkable Phoebe Fox plays his precocious teenage niece Catherine and the action takes place against surprisingly simple stage sets, prioritising the action and delivering a significant emotional bite. If you like your drama exceptionally tense, you'll love it.

What's the story? Eddie Carbone is an Italian-American Brooklyn dockworker who lives with Beatrice, his wife, and their orphaned niece Catherine. She's in her teens, right on the cusp between girlhood and womanhood, and it's making Eddie very uncomfortable. He's anxious about her budding sexuality and things get even more tense when Beatrice's Sicilian cousins arrive in the US illegally, keen to experience The American Dream for themselves.

Tall and dark, sulky and handsome, cousin Marco is determined to send money back to Sicily to support his wife and child. But his dramatically flamboyant brother Rodolpho catches Catherine's eye, and Eddie can't help but hate him for it.

As the tension rises, a painful battle of wills breaks out between Marco and Eddie, resulting in a fiery confrontation where everyday social, emotional and moral boundaries are broken. Ultimately, betrayal causes havoc for everyone concerned.

Mark Strong plays Eddie himself with Nicola Walker as Beatrice. Direction is by the hugely talented Ivo van Hove with design and lighting by Jan Versweyveld, costumes by An D'Huys and sound by Tom Gibbons. If you like your theatrical entertainment powerful, disturbing and disconcerting, this one's for you.
