A brand new production of Tennessee Williams’ glittering 1944 drama The Glass Menagerie? No wonder theatre lovers are getting excited. The play transfers to the West End in late January 2017 for a 13 week stint, having premièred on Broadway in 2013, winning multiple Tony Award nominations including Best Revival of a Play and Best Direction of a Play, and subsequently delighted audiences in Edinburgh.
The play is being billed as a 'heart-rending masterpiece'. The plot follows Amanda Wingfield, whose increasingly desperate attempts to encourage gentlemen callers for her shy and reclusive daughter Laura are supported by her son, Tom. But will the gentleman fulfil the family's dreams or only bring heartbreak?
John Tiffany directs, movement comes from Steven Hoggett, design from Bob Crowley, lighting by Natasha Katz, sound design by Paul Arditti and original music from Nico Muhly.
The brilliant award-winning US actress Cherry Jones takes to the stage as Amanda, Tony-nominated for her performance in The Glass Menagerie on Broadway and respected for roles in Doubt and The Heiress on stage, Oceans Twelve and Whiskey Tango Foxtrot on the silver screen. She's joined by Michael Esper as Tom, Kate O’Flynn as Laura and Brian J. Smith as the mysterious 'Gentleman Caller'.
