The first building to stand on the spot was demolished in 1886 during the rebuilding of Victoria Station and its environs. The second building also continues as a music hall until it, too, was pulled down in 1911. Built in the same year, the Victoria Palace as we know it today opened its doors to the public in November 1911 for Alfred Butt.

Designed by master theatre builder Frank Matchmam, the Victoria Palace is his last complete work in London. Facing Victoria Station, it is an imposing and unusual white stone edifice crowned with giant statues and a Baroque tower and dome. The classical façade, open loggia with Ionic columns high above the entrance and festooned oval windows is a supreme example of English Theatre architecture.

With a seating capacity of over 1,550 seats, it is one of London largest theatres. The richly ornamented auditorium has a domed ceiling and two tiers of three boxes on either side. Outside, on the pinnacle of the structure, was a gilded metal figure of Pavlova in full flight. Since the statue was taken down to protect it during the Blitz, its whereabouts remain a mystery.

The Victoria Palace has hosted some of the most prestigious musicals in London and previous productions include Charlie Girl, High Society, The Little Foxes, Buddy, Jolson, Fame, Kiss me Kate... Smash hit musical Billy Elliot has found a new home in the Victoria Palace and is enjoying an amazing success entertaining audience from all over the world!
