Eddie Izzard Great Expectations – Genius!

The Guardian calls it a “tour de force” take on Dickens’ classic novel. The HollywoodSoapbox website says the actor is “delivering the performance of the year". As the Wall Street Journal remarks, “Eddie Izzard commands a classic". CNN news says it is an “epic performance." This is Great Expectations, created to perfection in a one-person show adapted from the book by Izzard’s brother Mark, and it has been causing ripples over the Atlantic. Now it’s over here.

What's the story behind Eddie Izzard Great Expectations?

This not-to-be-missed one woman show is on stage at London’s Garrick Theatre for a limited 6 week run, booking from 24th May to 1st July 2023, following an acclaimed New York season. The actor portrays nineteen of the characters in a unique re-telling of Dickens’ masterpiece, a thrilling story packed with convicts, mystery, friendship, rivalry, unrequited love, revenge, and redemption.

Eddie Izzard Great Expectations theatre tickets showcase the awesome talents of Suzy Eddie Izzard, the respected and hugely successful actor, comedian, and multi-marathon runner, known and loved for breaking all sorts of boundaries across movies, TV, and theatre. But acting is her first love, and this performance taps into the thoughtful genius behind the comedy. The show gives audiences the opportunity to see Suzy Eddie in a solo performance, and she does the beloved epic story proud. Dickens would be delighted.

Interestingly, as she told WhatsOnStage, this performance is inspired by Izzard's discovery that she’s exactly 150 years younger than Dickens, and also taps into her experiences battling with dyslexia. It’s directed by Selina Cadell, who said “I find the combination of Eddie Izzard’s idiosyncratic wit and Charles Dickens’ ingenious storytelling irresistible and am looking forward to sharing it with UK audiences." As a nation that celebrates eccentricity and respects difference, it’s set to be a huge West End hit.

About Eddie Izzard Great Expectations

Written by Dickens during 1860 – 1861, Great Expectations is set in times of great social change, which is mirrored by the plot. It reveals the childhood and young adulthood of young Pip, a country blacksmith's apprentice who unexpectedly comes into a fortune thanks to a mysterious benefactor. He moves to London, makes his way into high society, meets the beautiful Estrella and falls deeply in love, only to find Estrella can’t return his feelings. And the mysterious benefactor turns out to be someone Pip really didn’t expect.

Seeing all this magical storytelling unfold on stage with just one person at the helm is quite simply remarkable, a theatrical treat you’re unlikely to forget in a hurry. It also happens to be tremendously funny, as Izzard plays with the script's humour to make audiences laugh out loud in the most unexpected places. Don’t miss it.
